Emerging from Nassau in the Bahamas in 1971, the band was formed around the Munnings brothers (Ray, Leroy and Frank) and the first song they recorded, ‘Funky Nassau’, became a No. 1 Billboard R’n’B hit, selling over a million copies. “We wanted to create something new,” remembers Ray Munnings, “something that was truly Bahamian. We loved funk but wanted to include elements of junkanoo, the indigenous music of The Bahamas.” An album was written within a week and recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami. “We brought in more Bahamian themes, like ‘Monkey Tamarind’, a wild fruit that grows there.”

Zeal & ardor is the one-man brainchild of manuel gagneux, a swiss-american formerly based in new york city. His approach draws on an alternate history and stems from two thoughts: christianity was imposed upon american slaves, just as it was imposed in norway, and black metal in the ‘90s grew as a rebellion to monotheism. Mixing blues, gospel, and soul with harsher music has opened up a world of possibilities for gagneux. Previously creating as a one man solo effort, the immense interest and critical acclaim zeal & ardor attracted upon release of debut album devil is fine, has led to the project becoming a fully-fledged, internationally-touring band. After months hidden away, crafting the new songs for stranger fruit, gagneux entered the studio with producer zebo adam and mixer kurt ballou (converge, kvelertak, nails). While the finished sound is larger and heavier, it is still unmistakably zeal & ardor. The diverse yet cohesive nature of the sixteen tracks on stranger fruit is desig

The Oxford based alternative rock band Swervedriver continued to develop themselves by implementing different music into their alternative rock and shoegaze sound. Their first album Raise can be categorized as an album with a heavy sound, but also some melodic parts. Their direct approach of the shoegaze sound can be heard by listening to a song like “Rave Down”. But they’re mainly focusing on the noisy and distortion guitar lines. While listening to the classic “Son of Mustang Ford” you feel the roaring engine run and are drifting back into the American landscape. It’s one out of the fascinating 9 tracks, with solid hooks and shiny guitar riffs. Twisted relationships get’s their punchline on the epic “Deep Seat”. The great debut album meant the start of a great career which haven’t been finished to this date.

It doesn’t sound like anything they recorded before, because they exploring different fields of music. The first notes of opening track “The Bit” make it clear that they’re experimenting with bringing together the drone sounds of the sitar with the greatness of King Buzzo’s guitar riffs. The schizophrenia can be heard in the introductions of noise and ambience. The album even includes prog based music, like in the epic “Buck Owens”. It’s one hell of a ride through the music, from sludge metal and experimental grunge to blues rock and pop. Another classic tune is “Bar-X and The Rocking M”, which explodes in the power of the trombone and monster riffs. On from the early days of The Melvins guitarist Buzz Osborne and drummer Dale Crover created some influential pieces and are releasing records nowadays on a yearly basis. The monster anthem “Revolve” is a true masterpiece that breathes the southern rock and got a handful of well crafted riffs. Another epic track and one of the best recordings by The Melvins is “At the Stake”. The droning riffs and bass/cymbal driven sounds are mind-blowing and it’s full of fantastic changes. “Queen” is a much more radio friendly approach, but even in this song you’ll feel the traditional Melvins sound.
